The two main problems are that 1) a pattern that gives a good grip in snow will affect stability in a negtive way on a dry surface and 2) the rubber in a tire made for summer use gets too hard at low temperatures to be able to get a reasonable grip. Rubber for winter use will wear too fast in summer conditions. One point when buying snow tires get the narrowest tires that the manufacturer recommends, when the snow gets to slush the only thing that helps is to get down to solid ground. /Anders
