I'm in NJ, as you know. That is not a typo. I owned a 1939 Cadillac convertible through my last year in high school and two years of college. Big eight engine and a stick shift. My best friend owned a 1939 La Salle simultaneously. His was fire engine red, mine canary yellow. Both were virtually mint. I grew up in Canada and as is well known Canada declared war on Germany in 1939 (actually hours before Britain did) so these were the last civilian cars made in Canada until 1947. Both had been up on blocks during the war and were not placed back into service for several years. They were both second cars of GM executives. I grew up in a GM town. The cars gave John and I incredible status on campus. Actually more than an associate professor who drove a classic Stingray. The biggest problem was to keep females out of our cars. Alas my car died a fiery death or perhaps I would have it still. John totalled his and almost totalled himself. They were a lot of enjoyment for three years. Malcolm
