Subject: Plug a Tire ?

Is plugging/patching a tire something a DIYer can do ? One of my tires has a slow leak. I tested the valve and it does not seem to be that, so I will be taking it off the car and looking for a puncture. If I find something obvious like a screw or a nail through the tread, is that something that an amateur should attempt to repair ? Or is it something that I should have done by a pro ? Is there something better than a "plug" like a patch from the inside that needs to be done ? Thanks for any info, Bob
