After changing I find a noticeable difference in smoothness and gas (petrol) consumption. Possible not worth while if the car is sold on after 3 years and intended for a ~100k total life (the service book stops after 11 entries). However, if you like to keep the car in good nick for a long time, then 5k oil changes is a good insurance. If you're worried about the worlds oil reserves, then recycle the oil at the nearest recycling centre. There are usually instructions written on the drain can. Johannes
