It would be a wider lip - it should reduce slightly the torque required to set the oil plug so it stopped seeping oil.. I agree it wouldn't be as long lived as an O Ring - but certainly would provide better load spreading on the seal across the female on the block (which would be keeping me up nights I can tell you).. I suppose then brother Tom would have to locktite the plug to make sure it didn't drop out if the fiber washer shrunk - but there would be an evident oil leak signaling the requirement for attention well in advanace I think..
