A few months ago my '96 9000CSE (2.3LPT) started racing when idling. Dealer suspected that the IAC valve needed a clean, but due to shortage of time it only got a squirt of cleaner - which fixed the problem for some weeks. Recently the revs started to creep up again when idling so I took the IAC valve out, cleaned it out, and refitted it. Started up again - idles rock-steady at 800 rpm. Thought that was it, but on the road it's a different story - once the car is thoroughly warm - e.g. 20 miles - the idling speed is very erratic - anywhere between 800 and 1800 rpm, sometimes rising and falling rapidly in between. In fact the problem is worse than if I'd left the darned thing alone! I can't find any vac pipes fallen off or perished, or with holes in them. Dealer can't look at the car til next week, and I'm about out of ideas. I guess the fact that the problem is worse since I cleaned the valve COULD indicate that the valve is stuffed. Anyone else want to offer an opinion? Car has 120K miles on clock by the way... Thanks folks...
