The oil filter system you're talking about is a bypass filter. They've been around for ages, but I never liked the idea for use on small engines. You typically see bypass filter setups on the large trucks and locomotives. The difference here is that it sounds like he has all of the oil pass through the filters instead of a normal bypass setup that filters a little of the oil at a time and then puts it right back into the crankcase, thus being called a "bypass" filter since it bypasses the engine. I'd be a little leery of having a toilet paper filter as your only filter, mainly oil starvation due to the toilet paper slowing the flow of oil down because it's quite a restriction.
