You're just a bit low on coolant, and the air bubble is settled in the highest point of the system (your heater core). Classic symptom is that it's OK when you're driving normally, but not at idle - just not pushing the water around as much at idle, so the buble stays in the heater core then. Should be a pretty cheap fix. If the mechanic doesn't know exactly what you're talking about when you describe the problem, find a different one.
