The belt/cable in the mechanism slips or breaks. The one on my '88 finally went and would only retract about half way down. I exploded the mechanism to take a look at the belt/cable, but it was sooo full of black gunk that I couldn't really see what I was doing and then lost some bits, got black gunk all over my carpet and decided to give up. It might well be that it has just slipped on the top cog - the spindle falls away from one side in the housing, or just breaks. Take the unit apart *very* carefully. This was the document I was following: http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/faq/antenna.html Maplins make a nice rubber whip aerial for a fiver. Over time it sets in a rearward position, which "gives the car a sporty appearance" and "improves the aerodynamics" to cite a couple of phrases from the Saab Accessories booklet (which was not actually referring to a fixed aerial, but I like the phrases) :) What about NeoBrothers - could they find you a working replacement? I'll ask my garage when I'm next there. Their business card cites "Spares", so you could try them - Aeromotive on 01924 422200. JG Motors may well have one http://www.saabspecialist.co.uk/ - good luck. Paul 1989 900 Turbo S http://saab.go.dyndns.org/
