Thank you all for your ideas and support. Bottom line -- it was the switch (the combination turn/high beam/cruise stalk). The local dealers in the Philadelphia area were asking $250-$300 for the item new; internet suppliers ranged from about $190 to $235. I bought a used switch from Volvo & Saab Auto Dismantlers in Rancho Cordova, CA (916-635-9970). Cost me $65 plus shipping for a used one. Real nice people to deal with. Switch went in with no problems -- and worked fine. Back on the road, inspection OK, now to start saving up for a new clutch (160k on car, about 85k on second clutch).
