I'm talking about the government classification which mandates a average fuel economy for a class of cars. As I understand there currently are two classes: the car-class, with relatively high standards for exhaust emissions and a truck class, which is allowed to pollute a bit more. For both classes an average fuel consumption figure is mandated, which is calculated over the average fuel consumption figures of the entire line up of a given manufacturer. Because the large SUV's mainly go in the truck-class, they only have to comply to lower emission standards and may have a higher average fuel economy. Mark
