The standards originally proposed would have made it impossible for manafacturers like Jeep to exist. In case SUVs were classified as cars, the average fuel consumption of the smallest model of Jeep was about the same as the average fuel consumption required for their entire line up. They could have never ever made a line up meeting those criteria. What I don't understand is why they didn't create a in-between class for the SUV's. More polluting then cars, but less then trucks. Determinning in which class a vehicle goes can be done by the number of seating rows. More than one seating row makes it a SUV. Yes, a six seat pick-up truck would be a SUV under this proposal, simply because it is also intended for transporting people. On the other hand, I can also imagine why they didn't. It would take me ages to explain the Dutch rules for commercial light vehicles to you. Mark
