Subject: Is thermostat defective?

My Saab is a 1992 9000S sedan I recently completed a round trip of about 1300 miles (about 2070 km). My fuel consumption seems reasonable. The average for the trip was 30.5 mpUSg (close to 12 km/l or 120km/100 l) I traveled almost all the way on four or more lane limited access highway stopping once each way for fuel and at an average speed on the dial of about 70 mph but between 65 and 75. The fuel use figure above is the final reading on the EDU, And the ambient temperature was about 40 F (about 15 C) The fuel used was 87 octane. BTW: the engine is at 165,000 miles (260,000 plus km, cruises effortlessly at 90 mph (140 klicks) if I choose to but do not .The oil is changed every 3000 miles (5000 km.) and is not appreciably down or dirty when changed. I use 10w30 natural fossil petroleum lubricant. Around town my engine temperature indicator "sits" at about one third, never higher and the EDU tells me that I am getting about 19 mpUSg. On this trip, almost as soon as I got up to speed, say five minutes later, the engine temperature indicator went to about one quarter where it remained, Is the engine running "cool"? How reliable is the engine temperature indicator? It does appear to respond correctly. How accurate is the 30.5 mpUSg shown on the EDU? It appears to be about consistent with my fuel purchases. Is the thermostat in need of replacement? Will this affect efficiency or any other engine operating factor? In other words, should I replace it or leave well enough alone. Thanks in advance, Malcolm
