True, but if your face gets far enough forward that it hits the airbag, there's nothing gonna stop it before it hits harder stuff if that bag isn't there. It's not so much what your car looks like right now, just sitting in it, it's how your body, the belts, and the car all deform during the crash. Dashboards move a lot more than people would think, depending on the crash (and the car, of course...never cut anyone out of a Saab...) > Yes, I know. There's huge (3" or so) holes in the back, to let them rapidly deflate. Probably for just that reason. >> Haven't seen one with a deployed airbag. > Have you seen one with someone wearing a seatbelt? Sure; the airbag doesn't know if you have your seatbelt on or not, it deploys if the sensors "see" the right amount of shock in the right direction. If you're not wearing your seatbelt, I suppose this could put you in the wrong place as far as the airbags are concerned so they'll be at best ineffective...if you're already in-flight inside your car, hard for them to do you much good. >> And, good luck trying to find anyone willing to do it. > Hmm...now there is a business opportunity for someone.
