However, my other car, a Mazda MX-5 Miata, is a stick shift. I bought the Miata several years ago, after years of driving nothing but V-8 automatics. I feel much more in control of the Miata, and I think this has something to do with the fact that, when you take your foot off the gas with a manual transmission car, the car responds immediately by slowing down. Presumably you don't get engine braking with any variety of automatic.
