The space it occupied is marked as free, and available for writing on. If it hasn't actually yet been overwritten, it is still there and could be recovered. The recommended method of "Erasing a harddrive" is to first repartition it, then format it, then overwrite the entire disk 8 times with 0's, each time deleting the 0's that were there before.
