Subject: Help - Noisy tappet/cam follower/lifter

I had the headgasket on my 9000 replaced last week but when I collected it one of the hydraulic tappets was noisy. I asked my indy about it and he said that it wasn't uncommon and should go within a couple of days. Not entirely convinced by this I asked a SAAB dealer and their technician said 'yeah that sometimes happens - give it a week'. The camshafts and tappets were removed prior to machining the head, but were marked up in individual plastic bags and put in a purpose made 'thingy' to make sure weren't mixed up. Well it still hasn't settled and I phoned my indy last night. He suggested going for a run keeping the engine above 3000rpm, citing a SAAB TSB (I've got to see it!). Two 10 minute runs later and no joy :-(. We're going to take the tappets out this weekend and asses the situation. Can the tappets be re-conditioned - when I was at uni (school) I had an Opel Manta with seized hydraulic tappets and I spent an evening taking them apart and removing a varnish-like deposit with carbon tetrachloride. The car ran quietly after that. I also had a sore throat and headache for a week, because I did this in my nice warm room with the windows shut - it was winter. I won't be making that mistake again! In fact I won't be using carbon tet. again as it's fairly nasty stuff. On a happier note, I'm going to look at an '88 c900 T16S tonight and so hopefully add to the stable :-) TIA AndyH '94 9000 CDE
