This allows air into the lines so that the lines can drain back to the pump--to prevent freeze-up in cold weather perhaps? Last year the jets had diminished to a dribble on my girlfriend's '97 900SE. I took the check valves apart and discovered, as another poster below notes, that the rubber plungers had decomposed into sticky putty. As a temporary measure I replaced them with T and L connectors I picked up at AutoZone for less than $3.00. Last week she finally had them replaced at the Saab dealer. Around $20 apiece for the valves and they tacked on another $20 for labor. I asked about the incidence of this problem and they told me it happens all of the time--because the fluid has SOLVENTS in it. Maybe Saab ought to find a better material to use in its $20 valves.
