The display is made from a single liquid crystal display (LCD) panel backlit by ordinary light bulbs and with an orange plastic filter infront of the display panel. The reason for the missing dots is that the cable between the LCD panel and the electronics circuit board is no longer making a 100% connection with the circuit board.
