Start off by checking the lifters (tappets). Get the engine hot, then remove the cam cover. Push down on each lifter with two fingers. There should be very little movement. If they're not pumping up, you'll get 1-2mm movememnt. Obviously you'll need to turn the engine to move the cam lobes of the next pair to test. Easiest way is to put the car in gear and push. Or you can turn it with a spanner on the crank pulley. -- Grunff
