Just an update... Recap: This is the car with the head gasket that was replaced by an independent. Immediately afterwards, the car still pressurised the cooling system and lost fluid. The chap took the head off, confirmed crack. Head sourced by me from Neo Brothers Ltd and supplied. Head was fitted but claimed to provide zero compression on 3 cylinders and 50psi on one. So the chap took the head off and did a basic fluid test by pouring water into the ports and claiming that the valves leaked so badly that they didn't seat and hence no compression. I have to say that I was dubious about this to the point of getting zero compression. Poor maybe but zero? The head next went back to Neo Bros who filled them with parafin and were happy with the leakage but nonetheless got the head re-machined and claim that the valves were vacuum tested. I popped a cam on and did note that the seats and valves looked like they had been cut. I returned the head and chappy had his own test done by another person who also said that the head still didn't seal on the valves. My point was that the leakage was no different from the old head albeit with a crack and that worked just fine. I maintain all along that the most likely cause was that one of the cams was not timed properly despite protestations to the contrary. Anyway, although slightly acrimonious, this morning my wife and I towed the car 20 miles to the local Saab main dealer and I feel things will move forward from this point. I'm also going to take the opportunity to have the front engine mount, timing chain and T piece on the washer bottle changed at the same time. Question now is whether this head is fit for purpose or not. At least a report from a Saab dealer will stand up better in court if it comes to that. David.
