I've driven a '03 9-3 on loan from the dealer, so I've seen the phone buttons on the steering wheel. Since it wasn't 'paired' with my phone I couldn't use it but I can tell you how my BT phone and after market carkit work in my '99 9-3. I have a Sony Ericsson T68i phone an a Sony Ericsson carkit. You have to pair the two devices before use by pressing some buttons. After that, whenever I start the car my phone and carkit connect to each other automatically (the phone stays in my pocket). I can talk and listen via the car speaker and the microphone in the ceiling. Receiving calls is easy, you just press the off-hook button on the tiny carkit control pad and talk. Originating calls is more difficult. I can either use voice dialling - which is not perfect at high speeds - or take the phone out of my pocket and dial manually. I usually do the latter. I heard that the Mercedes BT option has a better way to deal with outgoing calls. You can browse your GSM phone's phonebook on the in-car display and select the number to dial with buttons on the steering wheel. That last option sounds very useful and I hope the 9-3's factory BT option has a similar feature but I can't confirm this. X.
