Subject: Re: 2004 Saab 9-2

No photos or prices yet that I can find, either. ------ From www.edmunds.com: Saab has officially announced that it will introduce this new entry-level model next spring. The announcement comes after General Motors, which owns Saab and has a controlling interest in Subaru, decided to exploit the two brands' similar personalities. To that end, the 9-2 will be essentially a rebadged Impreza with the base model offering a 2.5-liter flat four while Aero models will get the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder from the WRX. All-wheel drive will be standard but expect the 9-2 to have a somewhat more upscale interior than your typical Impreza. The 9-2 will be built by Subaru in Japan with sales expected to start in the spring of 2004. Manufacturer's sketch: http://www.edmunds.com/future/2004/saab/92/100281357/photofull.html? ------ And this from AutoWeek mag in June: Japan gnashing Saab sources acknowledge that folks at Fuji Heavy Industries are none too pleased with GM's plan to sell a facelifted version of the Subaru Impreza WRX as a Saab 9-2 in the US. The idea reportedly is meeting opposition inside Subaru, where executives see it as a desperate attempt by GM product czar Bob Lutz to draw on GM's patial ownership of the Japanese automaker to aid GM's wholly owned and financially ailing Swedish arm. But Saab officials on both sides of the Atlantic say the all-wheel-drive 9-2 wagon, powered by Subaru's 2.5 liter flat four is still a go. Production of 7,000 units per year starts next spring, with cars arriving at US dealers by summer 2004. --------- IMHO, the Impreza isn't a Saab, but it's a sweet car in its own right, lacking only in the areas of style and creature comforts. If the price is reasonable and the Swedes are allowed to put their stamp on it, it could be an interesting entry to the Saab lineup.
