I wouldn't buy anything as expensive, or potentially expensive, as a house or car without an independent inspection. When I bought my 9-3, I already had a short list of needed repairs in hand -- none of which were visible without wrenching. The inspection, at an independent shop I've used for years, cost $60. It allowed me to negotiate a couple of grand off the asking price and saved me unpleasant surprises after the sale. I'm not questioning your ability to seek or find potential trouble in a used car. But for most of us mere mortals without x-ray vision and intimate knowledge of the shop manual, an inspection is cheap insurance.
