I have found that the auto dimming mirror is better in theory than in practice. When the only traffic is behind you at night it dims , but if there is traffic approaching you with it's lights on then the auto dim does not function when traffic comes up from the rear. Also headlight reflections from big direction signs can prevent the mirror from dimming. It appears to work on the light value diffrence and if the difference is not great then it does not dim.
