I had a similar problem with my 01. It turned out to be the control arm. Once replaced problem solved. Please note that there is a tech bulletin out there w.r.t. the rubber strut tower bushing causing a rubbery rubbing noise when there is sudden suspension compression (i.e. small speed bumps).
