Subject: 9000 gearbox mount and 2nd popping out -UPDATE-

Hi, today ive finally been able to drive my 9000 through the pile of cars (E30: B6, M3, 325, 325ix touring, 318is, 914/4 2.0 etc.) and up the lift to continue working on the gearbox mount. the inner wheel plastic cover came off pretty fast and it revealed a (to me shocking) picture of rust on the welding spots where the subframe is connected to the frame... but after consulting my friends best friend lisa, i was told that it isnt all that bad and i was luckily able to scratch off the musty rusty stuff with a steel brush and cover it with tectyl amber(tm)(r)(c)(thebest). then i found out that i had to remove the gearbox end casing in order to remove the gearbox mount bushing ... i did that after some silly attempts to remove the bushing with the end casing still in the car. i paid special care not to destroy the plastic oil drain and the gasket of which one half was stuck to the wrong half of the gearbox if you know what i mean :D so i went on and tried to remove that darn bushing, but i just couldnt do it until i came to use the butcher-method the next day(today). i just used the good old hacksaw to cut through the ring to take off the tension, a propane gas burner (campingaz heater) to heat it up, because someone left the oxygen bottle of the autogena gas burner open and we couldnt use that. then my friend just slammed the whole bushing out with a big hammer tapped by a rubber mallet. finally the sizzling smoking (smell reminded me of the burn-out session some days ago) bushing was laying on the ground and i cleaned the gearbox casing, put the new powerflex bushes in and bought some burgerking-fastfood for me and my friends. i then reassembled everything, it was a bit of a fiddly job, because i didnt use an engine crane to move the engine for inserting and removing the bush, i supported it by a wood block from below and so i had to go up and down with the car lift to position it properly (e.g. make the holes line up :D) i tightened the gearbox mount screws when it was in correct alination, and i fixed the engine stay bar (torque arm) when the car was back at the ground, oh, i put the wheel and the wheel cover stuff back on before i did that of course. then i just refilled some gearbox oil as i lost a little slurp (maybe 200 ml) when opening the end casing. i took some pictures that i will put online soon, when i get them. i didnt feel like checking the spark plugs yet cos the car is running fine again, but i smeared the massive earth point at the one screw of the gearbox casing with some copper grease and cleaned the area around. the car feels much tighter now, shifting goes better and all that but it still jumps out with an 100% probability when going off-acceleration rolling into a right turn and it 100% never goes out of 2nd under any conditions when doing a left turn, it sometimes pops out when going straight. this is very mysterious to me, i will check out the lower engine mount on the other side and the joint gear shift rubber next. hope someone enjoyed reading that and maybe it even helped, if you need help doing something like that (motor mounts etc.) feel free to contact me. bye simon
