The pump is actually two pumos - a pre-pump and a main-pump. From your description it sounds like the main pump is failing to start. > the car has done 104,000 miles which i thought was a bit young to > develop a faulty fuel pump ...but recently i have to admit to my shame > ....i have been running the car low on fuel ...i know this is something > which should not be done with any car and it looks like it may well be > an expensive lesson to learn A little young, but not unheard of. > the pump has failed to start twice and each time i have managed to start > the car by jumpering fuses 27 & 30 in the fuse box as Bently suggests > with a sharp whack with the handle-end of a big screwdriver to the top > of the pump which gets the pump "whrrring" and the car starts when it > is next cranked ...I should mention i havent tried the relay tests also > mentioned in Bently ... i have assumed its the pump ...could i be > wrong? Do you take it out? > can anyone offer any advice ? ...Could the pump be serviced? ...Is it > possible it has been clogged or something from sediment in the tank? The pump sits at the top of the tank, so doesn't suffer from sludge. > a couple of months ago the car went through a short phase where it'd > judder and lose power momentarily but it cleared up and stopped after > replacing the dizzie cap rotor and plugs but it did at the time cross my > mind it may have been a fuel supply problem You need to figure out whether it's the pump or the relay. If jumpering the relay starts it, but then when you remove the jumper it keeps going then it's probably the pump. If you have to leave the jumper in to keep it running then it's almost definitely the relay. -- Grunff
