Subject: Transmission trouble?

Got an '88 900T 5-speed manual tran. About 270,000 miles. It all of a sudden no longer goes into 5th gear. It's popped out of reverse for years if a long hard reverse. It does make a whine that has been getting progressively louder, I first noticed it mostly when driving in third gear. Mechanic says tranny is toast forget about the car. They said the noise is not a good sign and there is some stuff in the fluid. I did notice one other unusual thing that just started this weekend - when it is in reverse and you are backing up - if you depress the clutch pedal and allow the car to coast it almost immediately locks up like someone jammed on the breaks BIG TIME! It only does this intermittently, and I did notice that when it does do this, when you start out again there seems to be some slippage in first gear. The other interesting thing is that the shift up light will stay on steady after this happens until you get through a couple of gears. Is there anything I can check or do before calling the boneyard? Just before all of this I was noticing that the brake pedal would sometimes sink a bit meaning the master cylinder was probably on its way out, but I'm not sure if this is a clutch issue - not a lot of experience in the tranny and clutch departments. Thanx for any help in saving this vehicle. I just put a bunch of cash into for other repairs, hate the thought of just throwing it all away!
