Subject: SAAB Memories...

I just heard that a family friend (who just bought a VW Jetta) used to drive a 1971 SAAB 96! After getting over the shock that I was in company with an original SAABer...I said the predictable... did you have to mix the oil. She said "NO! Everybody asks that!" I remember peering into these cars and being in awe of the HUGE steering wheel... was it actually bigger than normal to offset the lack of power steering? A quick check of the pile of SAAB history stuff here says that the 96 had the V4 engine. The 2strokes must of been only on the 93's? Was there a separate tank for oil for those? I remember them flying by our house when I grew up. The noise (and smoke) was very characteristic ringddinnggg. What made that noise? One day one went into a ditch across the road but it didn't stop it kept flying down the road IN the ditch. Many years later a Volvo (probably 80's) slid off the road into the same ditch and the wheel folded under and had to be towed out. I do remember a neighbor who I used to work for wrestling with a 99 steering wheel just to turn around. and that I could NEVER find the door handles in the dark. And then there was the story of a friend of my brothers with a 99 with the overdrive button on the stick that he never dared touch. Any idea why that was? Then there's the few minutes I had in a Sonnett with the free wheeling transmission. That's got to be one of the weirdest feelings. Someone should start a museum where you can drive all of these SAABs. Ah- memory lane... -D
