Subject: Characteristics of OG 900

I recently bought my first Saab, an 87 900 8V bare bones model with an automatic. It only has 40K on it and I tuned it up and replaced all the cooling and vacuum hoses right after I got it. Now that I'm spending some time in it I have noticed in comparison to my Japanese and American cars it vibrates alot and is very loud at highway speeds. It revs at 3,500+ doing 65-70mph and the droning is so loud it is difficult to carry on a normal conversation. The cavernous cabin seems compund the problem almost acting like a echo chamber. I'm thinking of adding some type of soundproofing like Dynomat or spraying some undercoating under the carpet. Any thoughts? Also the engine has a feel like it is dragging. I know its an 8V with an auto but the feeling is not of lack of power or pep, its a feeling of friction and the engine not revving freely. Kind of like the engine drag you feel when you downshift to a lower gear going down a hill. It is actually running fine but feels like a truck engine. I noticed it right after I changed the diff fluid although I used the factory reccommended 80-90 GL gear oil but I don't know if this has anything to do with it. The best description I can give is that it sounds and feels more like a sewing machine than a car engine. Is this normal for the 8V? The car is running fine. I get about 23mpg in mixed suburban driving. Any insight would be apreciated. Dave T. 87 900 8V Auto Newbie Saaber
