Subject: quite bizarre handbrake behaviour.

Thought as they had been on for between 9 and 12 months (and I had a spare set anyway) I thought I would check the front brake pads, give everything a general clean up and see if I could adjust the handbrake (front) as it was starting to point sky high again. So off came the wheel, popped the pad out from one side, and it still had about 50% of the surface material on (but a little worrying that it was worn slightly unevenly on brand new discs fitted at the same time as the pads and recon calipers) after about 10k miles. Checked the handbrake pivot was fully loosening so that was fine. Decided to try to reset the self adjust in the car. So pump pedal 6 times, click handbrake on 4 clicks, pump pedal another 4 times and lift handbrake till it locks. Seemed to make absolutley no difference to the handbrake even though I had done it several time. Needed to nip out. Got in the car, and drove for a while. The stopped at some lights, and on with the handbrake. Amazing, locks at about 4 clicks lower, so the button is level with the top of the passenger seat instead of at about 60 degrees from horizontal. Amazing. Don't know what it has done, but the car was yet again fixed itself in exchange for a little TLC when I couldn't find anything to fix. Even after it had cooled for a while and I came back, it still worked at the same level when I next used it, so it isn't a binding brake that is causing the disc to heat and expand. Fantastic. One less job to worry about for the MOT next month. -- Carl Robson (The poster formerly known as Skodapilot) http://www.bouncing-czechs.com
