Subject: odd noise decelerating in gear (c900)

Hi, I've noticed a weird noise from my c900 (1992, 5spd, non-turbo, 119k miles). It occurs quite reliably when I take my foot off the gas and let the car slow down in gear. As the tachometer needle passes the 2000 RPM mark, there is a brief sort of crunching sound from the engine. This happens in any gear (though I notice it mainly in gears 1-3, probably due to lower road noise at those speeds). If I take the car out of gear and slow down using the brake, no noise. If I rev the engine without the tranny engaged and let it come back to an idle, no noise. The car runs perfectly in every other respect. So I'm totally baffled. What could it be? Thanks, John
