Subject: Removing evaporator in 900C 1987 16V

I need to remove the AC evaporator from its housing and disconnected the 2 hoses, cover and capillary tube. Now as I am sliding the evaporator out into the engine compartment I find that it seems to long to withdraw with the engine in place?? What am I doing wrong? Don't tell me the engine needs to be pulled first?? Any help and opinions greatly appreciated from those in the know. And what would all have to come loose to even remove the Evaporator housing including the recirculation valve asm? Does the whole dash have to come out first or is there a more clever way to do this? Thanks guys! Wil in Holland (Europe :-))
