Subject: Shift Up Light



What controls the idiot light on my dash that tells me to "shift up" 
(manual transmission on 900se turbo)?
Is it simply engine rpm or something else?
If I shift up when it says to, the car knocks and pings and loses power.
Might it need adjustment of some kind?
