Don't worry about the location of the fuel tank. If there's an accident severe enough to rupture the tank you'll have far more important things to worry about than a fuel leak. You're far more likely to have a fire from fuel lines under the hood, or to get struck by lightning or run over by a semi truck. If you want safe, it's hard to beat an older Volvo, you can pick one up for a song and they're virtually indestructible.
