Subject: AC Advice

I have a 91 900S and the air conditioner isn't working. It has a history of me taking it to the shop, them looking for leaks, not finding any and then charging the system. The AC works for most of the summer and then it peters out and stops working. So clearly there is a leak. This time I decided I'd just buy a recharge kit from the store and do it myself. The system has already been refit for 134-A. When I attached the gauge to fill it the reading was low (about 15 psi I believe). I followed the directions and charged it to about 40 psi. It didn't take very much, only a fraction of a can. But the compressor still does not come on when I hit the AC switch. I know that there are a couple of sensors that can prevent the compressor from running. What I find strange is that it took so little refrigerant to bring the pressure back up to the normal range. I am guessing that this indicates that the system is not "open" and so I'm only putting the gas into a very small volume. But I'm not sure why this would be. Unless something is actually broken now and it needs more than a recharge. I'm new to this AC repair business so I thought I would seek out other people's experiences and suggestions. Thanks a lot, Mark
