In any event, the noise was not evident when I returned to my car. I checked the PS fluid level, and it was rather low (it's been leaking for a long time), so I filled it up (it took about 300ml, which is nearly half the total volume of the system I think). Anyway, I predict it will keep working until I get around to fixing it. John
