Because educated 'middle class' Indians speak pretty good english, a large industry has sprung up in India 'outsourcing' call centre facilities for many native english speaking countries. It's considered to be a good employment prospect there. When they call themselves Jim or Annie - you know you're talking to one of the nastier ones. They 'make up' what they think are friendly sounding names to the Western - hmmm Oz even - ear. It's pretty obvious when it's fake though. I'd be happier if they said ' hello this is Pradeep / Reshma talking to you ' actually. I've had varied experiences. The worst was when American Express offloaded their UK call centre - the guy on the end of the phone tried to tell me I was 'mistaken' when he simply didn't understand my question. Luckily, Amex must have twigged the problem and did a telephone survey where I gave them hell for outsourcing. They use real Brits again now ! On another occasion I got cold-called by an Indian sounding chap calling himself some english sounding name. It was obviously a con - so I confronted him - and he giggled in an embarassed fashionand and hung up the line. Most recently I spoke to an Indian gent in a call centre who was actually helpful, polite, knowledgable and didn't have the deep accent ! Maybe he wasn't in India after all ? LOL ! Graham
