Subject: Re: [Saab_c900] 1983 8V turbo car fuel-pump news
Today I had a go at creating a working fuel-pump assembly. And I really
had to work for it!
The fuel pump out of the donor car is a failure - it runs, but will not
draw up any fuel. Even with the 'shady' pick-up comprising of a piece of
plastic tube holding a bit of filter gauze over the pump inlet!
So after getting all that put together, the pump came out again and I used
the pump that was in the car originally, but with the old pickup remnants
removed and replaced with the plastic tube and piece of filter gauze.
Once it was all in place, I flow-tested the pump which was spot-on, and
pressure-tested it once I re-connected the return line to the fuel
distributor.
It's too dark outside now to try running the engine but everything is set
to do that first-thing tomorrow.
Today I also took the opportunity to replace the fuel level sender. The
car has the original style with four wires in, and two out to the fuel
pump. I was able to get a new one from an Ebay seller in the UK for a low
price, and now I'm getting the correct reading on the fuel gauge which is
at present just above 'R' since the tank fuel depth at the moment is only
about 50 mm. So having the fuel sender fixed is a good thing.
The old sender looks like it's earth double-terminal has been subjected to
overheating caused by bad connections to one of the lugs. The plastic is
just a little melted and slightly darkened to suggest localised heating.
Perhaps this is the reason the 3-pin VDO style of sender was used in
1983.5 and later C900's?
BTW, there is meant to be a retro-fit kit to change the wiring to allow
the use of the later type of fuel sender - anyone know if that might be
still available from somewhere?
Craig.
