It changes the AT's internal shift program from "economy" to "sport," which upshifts at full rpm for maximum acceleration. I use it when leaving toll booths. BTW, if there is a snowflake button at the base of the shifter, it will start you out in 2nd gear to avoid wheelspin on ice--sort of the opposite of the 'S' button.
