Mike,
It sounds to me like it was actually the serpentine belt that you are
having problems with, not the timing belt. If the timing belt slipped
enough to cause smoke and a burning smell, you'd have lnown it instantly
by the loud bang from the engine compartment and the engine dying
immediately.
