Subject: Spooky Saaby Squeaks
I recently bought a 1990 Saab 900i 16v from a dealer in Iceland (where
I live) and love her to death. I was actually shopping around for some
small 4wd like a Suzuki Vitara when I came across this baby and from
that point on, there simply was no other choice - class over
convenience anytime. The car had done about 180 thou in klicks but was
running fine when I bought her, although I was told at the time I
bought it she would soon need a new AT filter. In the last weeks though
I have become familiar with the Saab's numerous quirky squeaks and
grunts. I have noticed a particularly unpleasant whining or perhaps
more accurately described as rubbing sound. It can be heard clearly
when you go slow (10kph) with the window open. It sounds like its
coming from the front wheels so I can only suspects its the ball joints
or something similar. The sound is kind of like a squeaky rubber so
maybe its a seal of some sort? The sound is no different if the brakes
are applied and I'm pretty certain its nothing concerning them. I have
yet to check the grease levels in the joints but will get to that
before taking her to a mechanic. If someone could give me their
thoughts before I take her to the doctors it would be much appreciated.
