My '97 9000 had the same noise, which I noticed just after I bought it used. The sound was coming from the same location as yours, and stopped when you gave it a little gas. I ran across this post from a BMW owner who had what sounded like the same issue http://jackassofalltrades.com/ticker.html . And I took of the passenger fender liner, felt the evap canister control/puge valve/solenoid while running, and yes, that was it. I was going to isolate it, but then after a couple of months it stopped ticking completely. I hope this helps.
