Hi John,
I'm no pro, ut the one thing I would want to know (and ask your
friend straight up) is "did this car ever overheat?". Whether it was
low coolant, or a broken alternator belt, or a bad radiator, you want
to know. I had to replace the head gasket because my 89 Saab Turbo had
overheated (pegged once) and ran hot enough times that the head gasket
needed replacing. When I got in there I found that the last mechanic
did a crap job. I have to point out that there was only one owner,
also, and I had full records (until his mechanic stole them back from
inside my car once I became the new owner!). Just know if it has any
tendency to run hot and at the first sign of a problem DEAL WITH IT!.
Check all belts. The worst mine overheated was when the charging system
went down due to a broken belt and there was no juice to power the fans
and I was in the middle of nowhere trying to find a place to pull over
and use a phone.
All the best to you. These are tanks. Great for our kids and fun to
drive.
I want another one for my 16 year old daughter.
All Blessings,
Dharam
