There is nothing holding it on. You have to cut it off. Some guys
suggest using a hacksaw. I was not at all comfortable with that once I
got in there- too many other parts in the way. I used a utility
knife, and slowly and carefully worked my way through the plastic with
three cuts until I could pry it off. It took a long time as I did not
want to cut off a finger.
Make sure when you put the new one on that the Reverse release tube is
properly oriented so that the reverse lockout still locks out
properly.
Lastly, I had one heck of a time trying to get a new knob that
allegedly fits both the 9~3 and NG900. I had to remove some material
from inside the new one. I think the NG900 knob really needs to have
splines precut for the shaft but the replacements don't. Mr Dremel
helped me out with that. If you try to put yours on and after exerting
enough force that you think you might be about to break something on
you or the car, try removing a little material inside the knob.
