9-2X Recall Sept 6, 2011
Posted by Leslie (more from Leslie) on Mon, 12 Sep 2011 19:01:41

Subaru is recalling 2002-'07 Imprezas and 2003-'08 Foresters and Saab is recalling 2005-'06 9-2Xs because of a suspension problem that could result in loss of vehicle control, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall totals 295,123 cars.

"The front lower control arms may break at the hanger brackets due to corrosion if the hanger bracket is exposed to salty and humid environments such as roads containing snow-melting agent," NHTSA said in its recalls summary of the problem. "A broken control arm can result in the loss of control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash."

The affected vehicles were sold or registered in so-called "salt belt" states. They are Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

The recall involves 104,981 Subaru Imprezas, 179,795 Subaru Foresters and 10,347 Saab 9-2Xs. The 9-2X is an Impreza twin.

Subaru dealers will inspect the degree of corrosion of the front lower control arms and will either rust-proof or replace them. The recall is expected to begin in November. Owners can contact Subaru at (800) 782-2783.
