It wouldn't be that hard. You know how many gallons a full tank holds according to the manual, so you figure out where on your gas guage true 1/2 full is. Then, you keep track of miles driven to that point from a full tank. After that, you keep track of miles driven from 1/2 way until you decide to refill (maybe even waiting for the warning light). When you refill completely, subtract 1/2 of a full tank's-worth of gallons from the refilling amount, and divide the miles driven from 1/2 full by the remainder of fuel amount. Compare that to the mileage driven on the 1st 1/2 tank.
BTW, the refilling thing doesn't work all that well to begin with. There are some gas stations whose automatic shut off for the pump is a gallon or so below that of other stations. In my area, at Phillips 66 (multiple stations) the auto shut off doesn't even bring my needle back up to the "F" line, where at other places it does.
