1) They run so hot already that it does not take long to go from really hot to it's too late. If it's boiling over and steaming shut it off unless you're in a very scary area.
2) If the low coolant warning is coming on frequently, you could have a problem with the tank of the cap. They run hot enough that the pressure valve in the cap crumbles after a while. The thermostat housings have been known to leak on some and the banjo bolt fittings at the turbo sometimes leak coolant.
