I tried a few things like jiggling some relays and pulling a radiator hose to
verify coolant level hoping for some quick magic. After testing and retesting it threw a P0031 code going uphill with and urgent SID message about engine overheating make stop and idle engine. The code then disappeared by itself and the OBD reported everything's fine and dandy.
I spent hours researching P0031, front O2 heater circuit failure. Not much out there about it though. Test for 12 volts going to the sensor, test for continuity from the sensor.
Also I had a key fob programmed by the dealer last week. Is there any chance they messed up the ECM during the fob program???
Thanks, as always.
Robert

ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Greetings,
My 2004 9-3 linear overheated today in the middle of nowhere.
Coolant level is good. There are no internal or external leaks. No oil in coolant, and no coolant in oil. No codes. SID showed message about air conditioner shut down due to high engine temp. Then SID said stop immediately and run engine at idle, or something like that.
I put the heater on full blast and tentatively motored on. The temp gauge returned to normal with the heater acting as the radiator. I was able to drive 20 miles home successfully, so long as the heater was on full blast. When I turned the heater off the temp started to climb back to overheat zone, taking about 30 seconds to do so.
What do I do?
Thanks, as always
